38 Special Coming to Ameristar Kansas City November 7
The band behind “Hold On Loosely,” “Caught Up in You” and “Second Chance” heads to Ameristar Kansas City on November 7, with a 2026 tour that pairs one of the strongest radio-rock catalogs of the ’80s with the group’s first new studio album in more than two decades.
For Kansas City fans of 1980s rock radio, November just added another date worth circling.
38 Special will perform at the Star Pavilion at Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 8:30 p.m. Current concert listings place the show at Ameristar’s 3200 N. Ameristar Drive location.
The concert gives Kansas City an opportunity to catch a band whose sound became virtually inseparable from American FM rock during the early and late 1980s — but 38 Special isn’t touring solely on memories.
The group is continuing its 50 Year Legacy era while promoting Milestone, its first studio album in more than 20 years. Released September 19, 2025, the nine-song record was created between tour dates and largely captured with the musicians playing together live in the studio.
That makes this a particularly interesting period in 38 Special’s history: a veteran band with an enormous ’80s catalog has actually returned to making new records.
The Sound That Ruled ’80s Rock Radio
38 Special formed in Jacksonville, Florida, during the 1970s, but the group’s commercial identity came into focus as the 1980s began.
Wild-Eyed Southern Boys arrived in 1981 and produced “Hold On Loosely” and “Fantasy Girl.” A year later, Special Forces delivered “Caught Up in You,” followed by Tour de Force in 1983 with “If I’d Been the One” and “Back Where You Belong.”
The formula was distinctive: enough Southern-rock guitar muscle to connect 38 Special to its Florida roots, but choruses polished enough to compete with the decade’s biggest arena-rock bands.
And then, remarkably, the band reinvented itself again near the decade’s end.
“Second Chance,” from 1988’s Rock & Roll Strategy, became another major hit and demonstrated that 38 Special could adapt to the changing sound of late-’80s radio.
The band’s official history says its career album sales have now surpassed 20 million, with those familiar songs continuing to drive a touring schedule that takes the group to more than 100 cities a year.
Milestone Proves the Story Isn’t Over
The current lineup is led by founding guitarist and vocalist Don Barnes, joined by keyboardist/vocalist Bobby Capps, drummer Gary Moffatt, bassist Barry Dunaway and guitarist Jerry Riggs.
For Milestone, Barnes and the band didn’t simply attempt to recreate an old record. The album includes songwriting collaborations with Jim Peterik of Survivor and Randy Bachman, plus a guest appearance from Train singer Pat Monahan.
Current single “So Much So Right” has also received an official performance-oriented video directed by Nick Spanos, while “All I Haven’t Said” highlights the more melodic side of the new record.
That new material gives the upcoming Kansas City show a little more significance than a standard greatest-hits appearance.

Why ’80s Fans Should Care
Few bands bridge Southern rock and mainstream ’80s radio quite as effectively as 38 Special.
“Hold On Loosely,” “Caught Up in You,” “If I’d Been the One,” “Back Where You Belong” and “Second Chance” span almost the entire decade, giving the band a catalog that fits naturally alongside Journey, Foreigner, Survivor and .38 Special’s other AOR contemporaries.
But the more compelling reason to see them in 2026 may be that they haven’t stopped creating.
Milestone arrived more than 20 years after the band’s previous studio album, and the group remains on the road with Barnes still fronting the band.
For Kansas City ’80s fans, November 7 offers both sides of the story: the FM-radio classics that made 38 Special famous and proof that the band still has some miles left on the highway.
